How Do I... Schedule Job A Job In Phases

Sometimes it is necessary to do the work for a job in phases. For example, when remodeling a house while it is occupied, it may be necessary to complete one bathroom before starting work on the other bathroom, so that there will always be one available. For a situation like this, Smart Contractor allows you to schedule jobs in phases.

To schedule a job in phases, follow these steps:

1. Enter number of phases.
Enter the number of phases the job will have (1 or greater) in the prompt for Job Phases in the Job Information entry form.
2. Assign job items to job phases.
Assign job items to a job phase by entering the phase number in the prompt for Job Phase in the Job Edit Job Estimate form.

You don't have to enter the job phase for every job item. When you enter the job phase for a group item, the program automatically assigns the same job phase to all items within that group.

For example, if a remodeling job consists of two major items: "Remodel Master Bath", and "Remodel Main Bath", you assign everything in "Remodel Master Bath" to phase 1 by entering "1" in the prompt for Job Phase under the "Remodel Master Bath" item, and you assign everything in "Remodel Main Bath" to phase 2 by entering "2" in the prompt for Job Phase under the "Remodel Main Bath" item.

When a job has more than one phase, the program schedules each phase as though it were a separate job. Phases are scheduled in numerical sequence: Phase 1 is first, Phase 2 is next, etc. The items in each phase are ordered like any other job, according to the sequence defined in the Schedule Model that you selected for the job in the job information entry form.

For example, if the job to remodel two bathrooms is scheduled in two phases, Phase 1 will be sequenced normally: Demolition, Framing, Rough Plumbing, Rough Electrical, Drywall, Painting, Cabinets, etc. Then, Phase 2 will be sequenced the same but it will start after Phase 1 has completed.
